The foundation, Mangfold i Arbeidslivet (Diversity at Work) began as a project ”Immigrants and the Work Life” (IBU) that started from the Action Research Project at the Work Research Institute from 1990 to 1993. The Red Cross International Centre and the government’s resources supported this independent project with the Norwegian State Adult Education Centre taking over from 1997-1999. Diversity at Work was established in 1999 and was registered as a foundation in 2001.

The foundation's aim is to influence the development of the diversity in the work life that all shall be included and given the same possibilities independent of gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, handicap, national origin, language and ethnic background. MiA aims to contribute to work environmenta that show that diversity is a value added for businesses. MiA has worked to adapt the Norwegian business’ cultural and employees competence with different ethnic and national backgrounds to develop a more cohesive work environment.
